Description
A delicious and easy-to-make Apple French Toast Casserole, perfect for breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients
- 8 cups day-old bread, cubed (such as French or challah)
- 3 cups milk
- 6 large eggs
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups apples, peeled and diced (about 2 medium apples)
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)
- 1/4 cup maple syrup (for serving)
- Powdered sugar (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Add the cubed bread to the egg mixture and gently fold until the bread is fully coated. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to absorb the liquid.
- Fold in the diced apples and nuts (if using) until evenly distributed.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Allow the casserole to cool for 10 minutes before serving. Drizzle with maple syrup and dust with powdered sugar if desired.
Notes
- For a caramelized topping, sprinkle a mixture of brown sugar and butter over the casserole before baking.
- Substitute the apples with other fruits like pears or berries for a different flavor profile.
