Description

Irish Soda Bread is a simple, hearty, no-yeast bread with a crusty golden exterior and a soft, tender crumb. Made with basic pantry staples like flour, baking soda, salt, and buttermilk, this classic bread is perfect for celebrating St. Patrick’s Day or serving alongside soups and stews.

Ingredients

For the Traditional Bread:

  • All-purpose flour
  • Granulated sugar
  • Baking soda
  • Baking powder
  • Salt
  • Softened butter
  • Melted butter (for brushing)
  • Buttermilk
  • Large egg

Optional Add-Ins:

  • Raisins or currants
  • Caraway seeds
  • Orange zest
  • Chocolate chips

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough:

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking sheet or cast-iron skillet.
  • In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  • Cut in softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

2. Form and Shape:

  • Add buttermilk and egg, stirring until combined.
  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly, just enough to bring it together.

3. Shape the Loaf:

  • Form the dough into a round shape and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet.

4. Brush and Score:

  • Whisk together melted butter and additional buttermilk and brush over the loaf.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut a deep “X” into the top to help the bread bake evenly.

5. Bake to Perfection:

  • Bake for 45 minutes, brushing with the buttermilk mixture every 15 minutes.
  • The bread is done when golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

6. Cool and Serve:

  • Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
  • Serve warm with butter, jam, or honey.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the dough to keep it tender.
  • Score the bread deeply for even baking.
  • Use a cast-iron skillet for a crispier crust.
  • Store at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
