Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough:
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking sheet or cast-iron skillet.
 - In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
 - Cut in softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

2. Form and Shape:
- Add buttermilk and egg, stirring until combined.
 - Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly, just enough to bring it together.

3. Shape the Loaf:
- Form the dough into a round shape and transfer it to the prepared baking sheet.

4. Brush and Score:
- Whisk together melted butter and additional buttermilk and brush over the loaf.
 - Using a sharp knife, cut a deep “X” into the top to help the bread bake evenly.

5. Bake to Perfection:
- Bake for 45 minutes, brushing with the buttermilk mixture every 15 minutes.
 - The bread is done when golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

6. Cool and Serve:
- Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing.
 - Serve warm with butter, jam, or honey.

Notes
- Don’t overmix the dough to keep it tender.
 - Score the bread deeply for even baking.
 - Use a cast-iron skillet for a crispier crust.
 - Store at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
