Description

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup cooked and crumbled breakfast sausage
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Grease a baking sheet or line it with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
  3. Add the softened butter to the dry ingredients and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk and egg. Pour this mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined.
  5. Fold in the cooked sausage, cheddar cheese, and green onions if using.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute until it comes together.
  7. Roll the dough into a rectangle about 1/2 inch thick. Cut into squares or triangles.
  8. Place the rolls on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
  9. Brush the tops with melted butter.
  10. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  11. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter version, add 1/4 cup of honey or maple syrup to the dough.
