Description

This recipe takes two beloved comfort foods—sloppy joes and garlic bread—and combines them into one irresistible dish. Juicy, saucy ground beef with a balance of sweet and tangy flavors, piled onto crispy, buttery garlic bread and topped with melted cheese. A perfect meal for weeknights, game days, or anytime you’re craving something indulgent.

Ingredients

For the Garlic Bread Base:

  • 1 loaf Italian bread
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt

For the Sloppy Joe Filling:

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/4 cup yellow onion, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup water

For the Topping:

  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • Chopped parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prep the Garlic Bread
    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Slice Italian bread in half lengthwise and spread softened butter evenly over both halves. Sprinkle with garlic salt.
    • Place on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until toasted. Remove and set aside.
  2. Cook the Sloppy Joe Filling
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and onion until browned and softened.
    • Drain excess fat, then stir in garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, salt, black pepper, and water.
    • Let simmer for about 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and sauce to thicken.
  3. Assemble & Bake
    • Spoon beef mixture evenly over the toasted bread halves.
    • Top generously with shredded mozzarella and sharp cheddar cheese.
    • Return to oven and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  4. Serve & Enjoy
    • Remove from oven, garnish with chopped parsley, and slice into portions. Serve hot.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add red pepper flakes or jalapeños.
  • Substitute ground turkey or plant-based crumbles for a healthier option.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven at 350°F for best results.
