Description

Chinese Brown Sugar Bread, also known as Guo Kui, is a delightful and slightly sweet bread that is easy to make and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup chopped green onions (optional for savory version)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, and baking powder. Mix well to ensure all dry ingredients are evenly distributed.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the warm water, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. If you are using green onions, add them to this mixture.
  3. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon or spatula until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until it has doubled in size.
  6. After the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a round ball.
  7. Flatten each ball slightly and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover with a towel and let them rest for another 15 minutes.
  8. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  9. Bake the bread for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown on top.
  10. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter version, drizzle honey or maple syrup over the warm bread before serving.
  • Experiment by adding spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough for a different flavor profile.
