Description
Classic French Donuts are light, fluffy, and deliciously sweet treats that are perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 large eggs
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)
- Powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg until well combined.
- In another bowl, beat the eggs, then add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few lumps are okay.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the batter rest for about 30 minutes at room temperature.
- In a deep pot or fryer, heat oil to 350°F. Carefully drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, frying a few donuts at a time to avoid overcrowding. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
- Using a slotted spoon, remove the donuts from the oil and drain on paper towels. While still warm, dust with powdered sugar.
- Serve immediately for the best taste and texture.
Notes
- For a chocolate twist, add 1/4 cup cocoa powder to the dry ingredients.
- For a citrus flavor, add the zest of one lemon or orange to the wet ingredients.
