Description

Delmonico Potatoes are a creamy, cheesy side dish with a rich history. Perfect for holidays or weeknight dinners, these potatoes are layered with velvety cheese sauce and baked to golden perfection!

Ingredients

  • 20 oz Simply Potatoes (pre-shredded for convenience)
  • ¾ cup milk (1% or your preferred variety)
  • ¾ cup whipping cream (for added richness)
  • 1 tsp kosher salt (enhances the flavors)
  • 1 tsp dry mustard (for a subtle tangy kick)
  • Generous dash of pepper (to taste)
  • Generous dash of nutmeg (adds warmth)
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded (freshly shredded for better texture)
  • 3 tbsp butter, divided (adds flavor and richness)
  • Paprika (for sprinkling, adds color and mild smokiness)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Casserole Dish
    • Butter an 8×8-inch casserole dish generously to prevent sticking.
    • Spread the entire bag of Simply Potatoes evenly in the dish.
  2. Create the Cheese Sauce
    • In a medium saucepan, combine milk, whipping cream, salt, dry mustard, pepper, and nutmeg.
    • Cook over medium-high heat, whisking continuously until the mixture is almost boiling.
    • Reduce the heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese. Whisk until the cheese is melted and the sauce is smooth.
  3. Combine Potatoes and Sauce
    • Pour the creamy cheese sauce evenly over the potatoes in the casserole dish.
    • Allow the mixture to cool slightly before refrigerating to help it set.
  4. Add the Toppings
    • Dot the top with slices of butter and sprinkle generously with paprika.
    • Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 12 hours or overnight.
  5. Bake the Potatoes
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Remove the casserole from the refrigerator and discard the plastic wrap.
    • Bake uncovered for 45 minutes, or until the top is bubbly and lightly browned.
  6. Serve and Enjoy
    • Let the casserole cool slightly before serving. Garnish with additional paprika or fresh parsley, if desired.

Notes

  • Use Fresh Cheese: Freshly shredded cheese melts better for a creamier sauce.
  • Refrigerate Overnight: Resting the casserole enhances the flavors.
  • Even Layering: Spread the potatoes and sauce evenly for consistent baking.
