Description
A deliciously savory dish made with caramelized onions, rice, and Gruyère cheese, perfect as a side or main course.
Ingredients
- 2 cups long-grain white rice
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are caramelized and golden brown, about 15-20 minutes.
- While the onions are cooking, rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
- Once the onions are caramelized, add the rinsed rice to the skillet and stir to combine. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the rice is slightly toasted.
- Pour in the beef broth, add garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
- Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the shredded Gruyère cheese until melted and well combined.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, substitute beef broth with vegetable broth.
- Add sautéed mushrooms or cooked bacon for additional flavor and texture.
