A delicious recipe for French Onion Sausage Rolls, combining savory sausage, caramelized onions, and Gruyère cheese wrapped in flaky puff pastry.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground sausage (pork or turkey)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1 package (17.3 ounces) frozen puff pastry (2 sheets), thawed
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F.
- In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter and add the chopped onion. Sauté until the onions are soft and caramelized, about 10-12 minutes.
- Stir in the garlic powder, thyme, salt, and pepper, and cook for another minute. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground sausage, cooled onion mixture, and shredded Gruyère cheese. Mix until well combined.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out each sheet of puff pastry to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut each sheet into rectangles, approximately 4 inches by 6 inches.
- Place a generous tablespoon of the sausage mixture along one edge of each pastry rectangle. Roll the pastry over the filling, sealing the edges with a fork.
- Place the rolls seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Brush the tops of the rolls with the beaten egg to give them a golden color when baked.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.
- Let the sausage rolls cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy warm!
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add 1/4 teaspoon of red pepper flakes to the sausage mixture.
- Try substituting the Gruyère cheese with cheddar or mozzarella for a different flavor profile.
