Description

This French Onion Soup Burger takes the rich, comforting flavors of French onion soup and transforms them into a gourmet, handheld indulgence. With a juicy beef patty infused with onion soup mix, topped with deeply caramelized onions and melted Gruyère or Provolone cheese, all on a toasted onion bun, this burger delivers richness, depth, and pure indulgence in every bite.

Ingredients

For the Patties:

  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef
  • 1 packet (or 4 to 6 tablespoons) French onion soup mix

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 ½ tablespoons butter
  • ¼ teaspoon thyme
  • ¾ cup water (as needed)
  • 1 tablespoon brandy or sherry (optional but recommended)

For Assembly:

  • 4 to 8 ounces Swiss, Gruyère, or Provolone cheese
  • 4 onion buns (or preferred burger buns)
  • Butter or oil for toasting buns

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Caramelized Onions
    • Sauté onions with butter, thyme, and water, letting them soften and develop a golden-brown color.
    • Stir occasionally and deglaze the pan with brandy or sherry for extra depth.
  2. Shape and Cook the Patties
    • Mix ground beef with onion soup mix, then shape into four 6-ounce patties.
    • Cook in a skillet or on the grill for about 3 minutes per side until browned.
  3. Assemble with Cheese and Onions
    • Top each patty with caramelized onions and a slice of cheese.
    • Cover briefly to let the cheese melt over the onions.
  4. Toast and Serve
    • Butter and toast onion buns for extra flavor.
    • Place the burgers on the buns and serve hot.

Notes

  • The key to perfect caramelized onions is slow cooking on low heat. Don’t rush the process!
  • Gruyère or Provolone cheese adds a rich, nutty melt that complements the onions beautifully.
  • Toasting the buns enhances their flavor and prevents them from becoming soggy.
  • Leftover caramelized onions can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 days.
  • Serve with crispy fries, garlic butter potatoes, or a light arugula salad for a complete meal.
