Description

Garbage Bread is the ultimate comfort food—hearty, cheesy, and packed with seasoned ground beef, crispy bacon, and tangy pickles, all wrapped in a golden French bread crust. Perfect for a satisfying meal or a fun party appetizer!

Ingredients

For the Basic Garbage Bread

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • 11 oz refrigerated French bread dough
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 3 tbsp mustard
  • 6 slices bacon (cooked and crumbled)
  • 2 dill pickle spears (chopped)
  • 8 American cheese slices
  • 1 large beaten egg
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
  • Thousand Island dressing (for dipping, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Your Oven:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray it with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and diced onion until browned. Season with salt and pepper. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Prepare the Dough:
On a floured surface, roll out the French bread dough into a large rectangle (about 12×18 inches).
  4. Add Condiments:
Spread ketchup and mustard over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border.
  5. Layer the Fillings:
Evenly spread the cooked beef mixture on top of the condiments. Add crumbled bacon and chopped pickles.
  6. Add Cheese:
Layer American cheese slices over the filling.
  7. Roll and Seal:
Carefully roll the dough from one long side to the other. Pinch the edges to seal, and place the roll seam side down on the baking sheet.
  8. Brush and Bake:
Brush the top with beaten egg and sprinkle sesame seeds. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Cool and Serve:
Let it cool for 5 minutes, then slice into hearty pieces. Serve with Thousand Island dressing if desired.

Notes

  • Make sure not to overload the dough with fillings to avoid difficulty in rolling and uneven cooking.
  • You can experiment with different cheeses, like cheddar or mozzarella, to customize the flavor.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge, wrapped in foil, and reheat in the oven for a crispy texture.
