Description
Ingredients
For the Basic Garbage Bread
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp pepper
- 11 oz refrigerated French bread dough
- 1/3 cup ketchup
- 3 tbsp mustard
- 6 slices bacon (cooked and crumbled)
- 2 dill pickle spears (chopped)
- 8 American cheese slices
- 1 large beaten egg
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- Thousand Island dressing (for dipping, optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Your Oven:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray it with non-stick cooking spray. - Cook the Ground Beef:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef and diced onion until browned. Season with salt and pepper. Drain any excess grease. - Prepare the Dough:
On a floured surface, roll out the French bread dough into a large rectangle (about 12×18 inches). - Add Condiments:
Spread ketchup and mustard over the dough, leaving a 1/2-inch border. - Layer the Fillings:
Evenly spread the cooked beef mixture on top of the condiments. Add crumbled bacon and chopped pickles. - Add Cheese:
Layer American cheese slices over the filling. - Roll and Seal:
Carefully roll the dough from one long side to the other. Pinch the edges to seal, and place the roll seam side down on the baking sheet. - Brush and Bake:
Brush the top with beaten egg and sprinkle sesame seeds. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown. - Cool and Serve:
Let it cool for 5 minutes, then slice into hearty pieces. Serve with Thousand Island dressing if desired.
Notes
- Make sure not to overload the dough with fillings to avoid difficulty in rolling and uneven cooking.
- You can experiment with different cheeses, like cheddar or mozzarella, to customize the flavor.
- Store leftovers in the fridge, wrapped in foil, and reheat in the oven for a crispy texture.
