Description

Hamburger Steak with Country Gravy is the ultimate comfort food. Tender, seasoned beef patties are smothered in rich, creamy country gravy, making this a hearty meal that’s perfect for any occasion. Serve it over mashed potatoes or egg noodles for a complete, satisfying dish.

Ingredients

For the Beef Patties

  • 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

For the Country Gravy

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • Pinch of ground cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 3 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Optional Accompaniments

  • Mashed potatoes or egg noodles

Instructions

  • Prepare the Beef Patties:
In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, salt, onion powder, and garlic powder. Mix until evenly incorporated, but avoid overmixing. Shape into 6 patties.
  • Cook the Patties:
Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties for 4-5 minutes per side. Transfer the browned patties to an oven-proof plate and place in a preheated oven at 300°F for 15 minutes to finish cooking.
  • Make the Country Gravy:
In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium-low and melt butter. Whisk in flour, cayenne pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Stir constantly for about 7 minutes until golden brown and fragrant. Gradually add milk, whisking to avoid lumps. Simmer until thickened, about 2-3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Combine and Serve:
Add the cooked patties back into the skillet with the gravy. Simmer for 2-3 minutes to meld the flavors together. Serve hot over mashed potatoes or egg noodles, with plenty of gravy.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or more cayenne to the gravy.
  • Make sure not to overmix the beef to keep the patties tender.
  • If the gravy is too thick, add a little extra milk to thin it out.
