A delicious and flavorful Hawaiian Shoyu Chicken recipe that combines soy sauce, brown sugar, and spices for a perfect balance of sweet and savory.


Ingredients

  • 2 pounds bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs
  • 1 cup soy sauce
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 green onions, sliced (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together soy sauce, brown sugar, water, rice vinegar, garlic, ginger, black pepper, and red pepper flakes until the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Add the chicken thighs to the marinade, ensuring they are fully coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight for better flavor.
  3. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  4. Remove the chicken from the marinade and place it in a baking dish. Pour the marinade over the chicken.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-55 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through and the skin is crispy, basting with the marinade halfway through.
  6. Once cooked, remove the chicken from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes.
  7. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds before serving.
