Description

This Hearty German Pasta with Smoked Sausage and Mushrooms is the ultimate comfort food. Smoky sausage, tender mushrooms, and a creamy sauce come together to create a rich, flavorful pasta dish. Perfect for weeknight dinners or special occasions, this recipe is easy to make, satisfying, and absolutely delicious.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp oil for frying
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 0.5 lb mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 lb smoked sausage, sliced
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 0.5 lb pasta (your choice)
  • 2 tomatoes, diced
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 0.5 cups heavy cream
  • Salt, black pepper, and oregano to taste
  • 4 oz cheddar cheese, grated
  • Parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  • Cook the Pasta: Cook your pasta according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

  • Sauté the Onion: Heat the oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-5 minutes.

  • Add Mushrooms and Sausage: Stir in the sliced mushrooms and cook for 5 minutes until softened. Add the sliced smoked sausage and cook for another 3-4 minutes, allowing it to brown slightly.

  • Add Garlic and Tomatoes: Stir in the minced garlic and sauté for 1 minute until fragrant. Add the diced tomatoes and cook for 2 minutes to release their juices.

  • Make the Sauce: Pour in the chicken broth and bring to a simmer. Stir in the heavy cream, then season with salt, black pepper, and oregano. Simmer for 3-4 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.

  • Combine with Pasta: Add the cooked pasta to the pan, stirring to coat it in the sauce. Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese over the top and stir until the cheese melts and combines with the sauce.

  • Serve and Garnish: Transfer the pasta to plates or bowls, garnish with parsley if desired, and serve hot.

Notes

  • Customize Your Pasta: Use any type of pasta you prefer, but short varieties like penne or rigatoni work best for holding the sauce.
  • Vegetarian Option: Skip the sausage and add more mushrooms or roasted vegetables like bell peppers or zucchini.
  • Storage Tips: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat on the stovetop with a splash of chicken broth to loosen the sauce.
  • Make it Spicy: Add red pepper flakes or a diced jalapeño for some heat.
