Description

Irish soda bread is a rustic and easy-to-make bread that combines four simple ingredients to create a tender loaf with a slightly tangy flavor. Perfect for pairing with soups, stews, or simply slathering with butter, this timeless classic is as comforting as it is delicious.

Ingredients

  • Dry Ingredients:
    • 4 cups (560g) all-purpose flour
    • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
    • 1 ¼ teaspoons baking soda
  • Wet Ingredients:
    • 2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

Preheat the Oven

  • Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • Lightly dust a baking sheet with flour to prevent sticking.

2. Mix the Dry Ingredients

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking soda. Mix thoroughly to ensure even distribution of the leavening agent.

3. Add the Buttermilk

  • Slowly pour the buttermilk into the dry ingredients.
  • Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough just comes together. The dough will be sticky and shaggy—avoid overmixing to keep the bread tender.

4. Shape the Dough

  • Lightly flour a clean countertop.
  • Transfer the dough to the floured surface and gently form it into a round loaf. Be careful not to knead or overwork the dough, as this can make it dense.

5. Score the Dough

  • Place the dough on the prepared baking sheet.
  • Using a sharp knife, cut a deep cross (about ½ inch) into the top of the dough. This helps the bread bake evenly and creates the traditional soda bread appearance.

6. Bake

  • Bake the bread at 425°F (220°C) for 10 minutes.
  • Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and bake for an additional 35–40 minutes.
  • To check for doneness, tap the bottom of the bread—it should sound hollow.

7. Cool and Serve

  • Remove the bread from the oven and place it on a wire rack to cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature with butter, jam, or alongside hearty soups and stews.

Notes

  • Fresh Ingredients: Ensure your baking soda is fresh for proper leavening.
  • Don’t Overwork: Gently shape the dough to avoid a dense texture.
  • DIY Buttermilk: If you don’t have buttermilk, mix 2 cups of milk with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice or vinegar. Let it sit for 10 minutes before using.
  • Check Doneness: Tap the bottom of the bread—it should sound hollow when fully baked.
  • Serve Fresh: Soda bread is best enjoyed the same day it’s baked.
