Description
Jian Bing is a popular Chinese street food, known for its deliciously thin crepes filled with a variety of ingredients.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups water
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 green onions, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon chili sauce (optional)
- 1 cup baby spinach or lettuce, chopped
- ¼ cup shredded carrots
- Sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, water, and salt. Whisk until smooth and there are no lumps. Let the batter rest for 15 minutes.
- Heat a non-stick skillet or crepe pan over medium heat and add 1 teaspoon of vegetable oil, swirling to coat the surface.
- Pour about ½ cup of the batter into the skillet, tilting the pan to spread it evenly into a thin layer. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the edges start to lift and the bottom is lightly golden.
- Crack the egg directly onto the crepe and spread it gently with a spatula. Sprinkle the chopped green onions, spinach, and shredded carrots on top.
- Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the egg is set. Drizzle hoisin sauce and chili sauce (if using) over the top.
- Carefully fold the crepe in half and then in half again to form a triangle. Slide it onto a plate and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
- Repeat the process with the remaining batter and fillings.
Notes
- For a spicier version, add more chili sauce or sprinkle red pepper flakes on top before folding.
- You can customize the fillings by adding cooked chicken, tofu, or other vegetables according to your preference.
