Description
Dak Gomtang is a traditional Korean chicken soup that offers a comforting and nourishing experience, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 3 pounds whole chicken, cleaned and cut into pieces
- 12 cups water
- 1 medium onion, quartered
- 4 cloves garlic, smashed
- 1-inch piece of ginger, sliced
- 2 teaspoons salt, or to taste
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 green onions, chopped (for garnish)
- 1 cup cooked rice (for serving)
- Soy sauce (for serving, optional)
Instructions
- In a large pot, combine the chicken pieces, water, onion, garlic, ginger, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and skim off any foam that rises to the surface.
- Cover the pot and let it simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the chicken is tender and fully cooked.
- Remove the chicken from the pot and let it cool slightly. Strain the broth through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the solids, returning the clear broth to the pot.
- Shred the chicken meat, discarding the skin and bones. Add the shredded chicken back to the broth.
- Taste the soup and adjust seasoning with additional salt if necessary.
- Serve hot, ladling the soup into bowls with a scoop of cooked rice in each bowl. Garnish with chopped green onions and drizzle with soy sauce if desired.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, add a few dried shiitake mushrooms to the broth while it simmers.
- You can customize the soup by adding vegetables such as carrots or radishes during the last 30 minutes of cooking for added nutrition and flavor.
