Description

Hearty Italian Lasagna made with layers of noodles, meat sauce, and cheese.


Ingredients

  • 8 ounces lasagna noodles
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cook the lasagna noodles in a large pot of salted boiling water until just tender, then drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, cooking until the onion is soft and translucent.
  4. Add the ground beef and Italian sausage, breaking it up as it cooks until browned. Drain any excess fat.
  5. Pour in the crushed tomatoes and sprinkle in the oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 15 minutes.
  6. In a separate bowl, whisk together the ricotta cheese, egg, and a dash of salt and pepper until well combined.
  7. In a 9×13 inch baking dish, layer the lasagna starting with meat sauce, then noodles, half of the ricotta mixture, mozzarella cheese, and more meat sauce. Repeat the layers, finishing with noodles topped with remaining meat sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese.
  8. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes until cheese is melted and golden brown.
  9. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving warm.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, substitute ground beef and sausage with ground turkey.
  • Add layers of sautéed spinach or zucchini for extra vegetables.
  • Incorporate red pepper flakes into the meat sauce for added heat.
