Description
The Muffuletta Sandwich is a classic Italian sandwich originating from New Orleans, featuring layers of meats, cheese, and a flavorful olive salad.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf (10-12 inches) round Italian bread
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1/2 pound sliced salami
- 1/2 pound sliced ham
- 1/2 pound sliced mortadella
- 1/2 pound sliced provolone cheese
- 1 cup olive salad (store-bought or homemade)
Instructions
- Slice the Italian bread in half horizontally.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, garlic powder, and crushed red pepper flakes.
- Brush the cut sides of the bread with the olive oil mixture.
- Layer the salami, ham, mortadella, and provolone cheese evenly on the bottom half of the bread.
- Spread the olive salad over the cheese, making sure to cover it evenly.
- Place the top half of the bread on the sandwich and press down gently.
- Wrap the sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
- When ready to serve, slice into wedges and enjoy.
Notes
- For added flavor, consider toasting the sandwich in a panini press or skillet for a warm, crispy finish.
- You can customize the sandwich by adding roasted red peppers or artichoke hearts to the olive salad for an extra kick.
