Description

Polish Cream Cake, known as Kremówka, is a beloved Polish dessert featuring layers of light, fluffy cake and a rich cream filling. This delightful treat has a special place in Polish culinary history and is perfect for special occasions, family gatherings, or an indulgent tea-time snack.

Ingredients

For the Cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 cup whole milk

  • 4 large eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For the Cream Filling:

  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream

  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Garnish:

  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

Step 1: Preparing the Cake Layers

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.

  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy (about 3-5 minutes).

  3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.

  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.

  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.

  7. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top.

  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  9. Let the cake cool completely before assembling.

Step 2: Making the Cream Filling

  1. In a large mixing bowl, pour in the heavy whipping cream.

  2. Add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract.

  3. Using an electric mixer, whip the cream on medium speed until stiff peaks form (about 3-5 minutes). Be careful not to over-whip.

  4. Refrigerate until ready to use.

Step 3: Assembling the Cake

  1. Once the cake has cooled, carefully cut it in half horizontally to create two layers.

  2. Place the bottom layer on a serving platter and spread half of the whipped cream evenly over it.

  3. Gently place the top layer back on and spread the remaining whipped cream over the top.

  4. Dust the cake with powdered sugar for a classic finish.

Step 4: Chilling and Serving

  1. Cover the cake with plastic wrap or a cake dome and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to allow the flavors to meld.

  2. Slice and serve chilled for the best texture and taste.

Notes

    • Ensure all ingredients, especially eggs and butter, are at room temperature for best results.

    • Use a serrated knife to cut the cake layers evenly.

    • Chilling the cake before serving helps the flavors meld together and makes slicing easier.

    • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

    • For extra flavor, add a layer of fruit (strawberries, raspberries, or peaches) between the cake layers.
