A simple and delicious recipe for chocolate babka that is easy to make and perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon instant yeast
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed (about 110°F)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, and salt. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the warmed milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- Sprinkle the cocoa powder and chocolate chips evenly over the dough.
- Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Pinch the seams to seal.
- Cut the log in half lengthwise to expose the layers. Twist the two halves together, then shape into a loaf and place it in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
- Cover the loaf with a kitchen towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Allow the babka to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, substitute half of the chocolate chips with chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans.
- Experiment with fillings by adding cinnamon sugar or fruit preserves for a different twist on the classic chocolate babka.
