Description

A simple and delicious recipe for chocolate babka that is easy to make and perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk, warmed (about 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for dusting, optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, granulated sugar, instant yeast, and salt. Mix well.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the warmed milk, melted butter, egg, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Once the dough has risen, roll it out on a floured surface into a rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Sprinkle the cocoa powder and chocolate chips evenly over the dough.
  8. Starting from one long side, roll the dough tightly into a log. Pinch the seams to seal.
  9. Cut the log in half lengthwise to expose the layers. Twist the two halves together, then shape into a loaf and place it in a greased 9×5 inch loaf pan.
  10. Cover the loaf with a kitchen towel and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  12. Allow the babka to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Dust with powdered sugar before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, substitute half of the chocolate chips with chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans.
  • Experiment with fillings by adding cinnamon sugar or fruit preserves for a different twist on the classic chocolate babka.
