Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, salt, and ground cinnamon until well combined.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the egg, then add the milk and vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. The dough will be slightly sticky.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thick.
  5. Cut the dough into 2-inch squares or rectangles using a sharp knife or pastry cutter.
  6. In a deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F.
  7. Carefully drop a few pieces of dough into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
  8. Use a slotted spoon to remove the beignets from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain.
  9. While still warm, dust generously with powdered sugar before serving.
