Ingredients

For the Batter
  • 2/3 cup All-purpose flour Substitute with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free version.
  • 1/4 cup Sugar Extra amount for the topping; substitute with coconut sugar for a lower glycemic index option.
  • 1 tablespoon Baking powder Always use fresh for the best results.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Enhances flavor and balances sweetness.
  • 1/2 cup Cold butter Use unsalted butter for better salt control.
  • 1 cup Milk Substitute with almond milk for a dairy-free alternative.

  • 4 pieces Gala apples Peeled and diced; try using Fuji or Honeycrisp for a different flavor experience.
  • 1 1/2 cups Orange juice Freshly squeezed is best.
  • 1/2 cup Honey or light brown sugar Natural sweetener option; agave syrup can also be used.
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon Replace with nutmeg for a unique flavor twist.
For the Pudding Layer
  • 2 tablespoons Melted butter Enhances the richness of the pudding beneath the cake layer.

Equipment

  • Crock-Pot

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, 2/3 cup sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk these dry ingredients together until fully blended, ensuring no lumps remain.
  2. Cut the cold butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Pour in the milk gradually, stirring until just moistened—avoid overmixing!
  4. Grease the bottom and sides of a 4-5 quart crock pot with cooking spray or melted butter.
  5. Gently spoon the batter into the greased crock pot, spreading it evenly across the bottom.
  6. Evenly distribute the diced Gala apples on top of the batter.
  7. In a separate bowl, whisk together the orange juice, honey (or brown sugar), melted butter, remaining sugar, and cinnamon until well combined.
  8. Carefully pour the orange mixture over the layered apples in the crock pot.
  9. Place a clean kitchen towel over the opening of the crock pot and cover it with the lid. Cook for 2-3 hours on high.
  10. Once cooked, allow the cake to cool slightly before serving.
