- In another bowl, mix sugar, applesauce, buttermilk, eggs, canola oil, and vanilla until fully combined.

- Fold in the shredded zucchini until evenly distributed.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan and sprinkle chocolate chips on top, pushing some down into the batter.
- Bake for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- Cool the cake in the pan on a wire rack before slicing into squares and serving.
