Ingredients

For the Batter
  • 1 cup Butter Ensure it's softened to room temperature for best results.
  • 1 cup Granulated Sugar Can be substituted with brown sugar for a deeper flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon Almond Extract Use a measured amount as it is potent.
  • 1 large Egg Make sure the egg is at room temperature for better incorporation.
  • 2 cups All-Purpose Flour Gluten-free flour can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder Make sure it's fresh for optimal rise.
  • 2 tablespoons Milk Any type of milk is acceptable, including non-dairy alternatives.
For the Topping
  • 1 cup Sliced Almonds Use either blanched or toasted almonds.

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • hand mixer or stand mixer
  • Baking Pan
  • Parchment paper

Method

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. In a mixing bowl, cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes. Add almond extract and blend thoroughly.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the egg until well mixed. Gradually add it into the butter-sugar mixture and mix until fully incorporated.
  3. In another bowl, sift together the flour and baking powder. Slowly add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just smooth.
  4. Prepare an 8x8 inch baking pan by greasing it or lining it with parchment paper. Press the dough evenly into the bottom of the pan.
  5. Beat another egg together with milk to create an egg wash. Brush this mixture over the top of the pressed dough and sprinkle sliced almonds on top.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 25 minutes or until golden brown and the center is set.
  7. Allow to cool in the pan for about 10-15 minutes. Cut into squares and transfer to a serving plate or airtight container.
