Cake Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and prepare four 6-inch round cake pans by greasing them with butter and lining with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the sifted cake flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat the unsalted butter with granulated sugar until light and fluffy, then add the egg whites.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients alternating with buttermilk until just combined.
- Divide batter into four bowls and add varying amounts of pink food coloring to create a gradient.
- Pour the colored batter into the prepared pans, bake for 30-35 minutes, and then cool.
Buttercream Preparation and Assembly
- Beat unsalted butter until fluffy, then gradually add powdered sugar, milk, and salt until smooth.
- Level each cooled cake layer, stack with buttercream in between, and apply a crumb coat.
- With remaining buttercream, tint three shades of pink and frost the cake starting with the darkest shade at the bottom.
- Pipe a swirl border on top and add pink ombre sprinkles if desired.
