Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1 box cake mix Provides structure and sweetness; feel free to substitute with a homemade cake base for a personal touch.
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract Enhances the nutty flavor.
  • 4 large egg whites Contribute to fluffiness; omit yolks for a pure white cake.
  • 1 cup whole milk Adds moisture; can substitute with almond milk for a dairy-free option.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter Essential for flavor and moisture.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Key for structure; always sift to keep the cake light.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Sweetens the cake; reduce if less sweetness is desired.
For the Frosting
  • 1/2 cup butter Ensure at room temperature for smooth blending.
  • 1/4 cup milk Use full-fat for creamy consistency.

Equipment

  • Oven
  • Mixing bowl
  • spatula
  • Cake pans
  • Whisk
  • wire rack

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease two 9-inch round cake pans with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, sifted flour, and sugar. Whisk until thoroughly mixed.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together egg whites, milk, and almond extract until smooth.
  4. Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients. Gently fold the batter until no dry ingredients remain.
  5. Divide the batter evenly between prepared cake pans. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Remove cakes from the oven and cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes. Loosen edges with a knife before flipping onto the rack.
Frosting
  1. Beat the butter and milk until smooth. Gradually add sifted powdered sugar, beating until fluffy.
  2. Once the cakes are cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread frosting on top, then place the second layer and frost the top and sides.
