Ingredients

For the Meat Sauce
  • 1 lb Ground Beef Provides rich, meaty flavor; substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • 1 lb Italian Sausage Adds depth and spices to the meat layer; can be swapped with mild sausage or omitted for a leaner dish.
  • 1 medium Onion Diced; adds sweetness and aroma to the sauce; shallots can be used as an alternative.
  • 3 cloves Garlic Minced; enhances savory flavor; use garlic powder in a pinch.
  • 1 jar Marinara Sauce 24 oz; forms the base of the meat sauce; homemade or store-bought options are suitable.
  • 1 can Crushed Tomatoes 14 oz; adds a fresh tomato flavor; can substitute with diced tomatoes.
  • 1 tsp Italian Seasoning Provides an herbal taste; replace with a mix of oregano, basil, and thyme if unavailable.
  • 1/2 tsp Salt Enhances overall flavor; adjust to taste.
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper Adds mild heat; substitute with white pepper for a different flavor.
  • 1 tbsp Sugar (optional) Balances acidity in the sauce; omit for low-sugar diets.
For the Cheese Mixture
  • 16 oz Ricotta Cheese Key ingredient for creaminess in the filling; can be replaced with cottage cheese if desired.
  • 8 oz Cream Cheese Softened; adds extra creaminess; regular or low-fat versions are acceptable.
  • 1 cup Parmesan Cheese Grated; contributes nutty flavor to the cheese mixture; Pecorino Romano can be used instead.
  • 1 large Egg Binds cheese filling; omit for a dairy-free version using a commercial egg replacer.
  • 2 cups Mozzarella Cheese Shredded, divided; provides gooey texture and flavor; use low-moisture mozzarella for best results.
  • 2 tbsp Fresh Parsley Chopped or 1 tsp dried; offers freshness to the cheese mixture; dried herbs can replace fresh.
For the Lasagna Assembly
  • 12 Lasagna Noodles Cooked; forms the structure of the dish; no-boil noodles can be used with extra sauce.
  • 2 cups Extra Mozzarella Cheese For layering; enhances cheesy appeal; can use a mix of different cheeses if desired.
  • Extra Parsley (optional) For garnish; adds a pop of color.

Equipment

  • large skillet
  • Mixing bowl
  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Aluminum foil

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. In a large skillet, heat over medium heat and brown the ground beef and Italian sausage along with the diced onion for about 5-7 minutes until the meats are no longer pink. Drain excess grease, then stir in minced garlic cloves, sautéing until fragrant (about 1 minute). Add marinara sauce, crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and optional sugar. Simmer gently for 10-15 minutes until thickened.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, softened cream cheese, grated Parmesan, egg, and chopped fresh parsley. Mix until smooth and creamy, which takes about 2-3 minutes of vigorous stirring. Finally, fold in shredded mozzarella cheese to enhance the richness of your creamy filling.
  3. Set your oven to preheat at 375°F (190°C). While it warms up, grab a 9x13 inch baking dish, lightly grease the bottom and sides with cooking spray or a small amount of olive oil.
  4. Start layering your Million Dollar Lasagna by spreading a thin layer of the meat sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Place down 4 cooked lasagna noodles over the sauce, followed by half of the cheese mixture, another layer of meat sauce, and a sprinkle of shredded mozzarella. Repeat this process until all ingredients are used, finishing with a top layer of meat sauce and remaining mozzarella cheese.
  5. Cover the assembled lasagna with aluminum foil, ensuring it's not touching the cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. After this time, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and turns a golden brown.
  6. Once baked, remove from the oven and let it rest for 10-15 minutes; this allows the layers to set and makes slicing easier. Add a sprinkle of extra parsley on top for color before serving.
