Step-by-Step Instructions
- Begin by cubing about 8 cups of stale Italian or French bread and layering it evenly in an 8x11 casserole dish.
- Sprinkle 2 cups of diced cooked ham over the layer of bread, followed by 1 cup of chopped fresh asparagus and 0.5 cup of finely diced red pepper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together 6 eggs with 2 cups of 2% milk, adding salt and pepper to taste.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread and fillings in the casserole dish.
- Top the dish with slices of Swiss cheese, ensuring even coverage over the entire surface.
- Cover the casserole dish tightly with aluminum foil and place it in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours or ideally overnight.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Remove the foil and place the casserole in the preheated oven. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
- Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. Before serving, sprinkle with diced green onions.
